Canadians Into Eternity don’t have it any easy, their style sits between death and progressive metal, but rather than write lengthy songs with separate parts, they just mix both styles in much shorter tracks. Ingenious in my opinion but very risky, while fans of death might find them too soft, prog fans might find them too harsh. I happen to really like them precisely for mixing all those elements the way they do.
There are way more different vocal styles and less vocal
harmonies on this album than on their previous releases.
I must admit I found the high pitch vocals on some tracks (a
la 3 Inches of Blood) unnecessary and a bit annoying at first, then again I’ve never been a fan of high pitch vocals, but the harsh vocals are much more frequent and work great in combination with the clean vocals. The tracks are so intricate and have so many elements within, that one pretty soon forgets about those scarce high pitch vocals.
The guitar work and the drums are spectacular too and if you’re into technicality you will find plenty of here. Ultimately Into Eternity have created their own style and that’s never an easy thing to do, originality gets punished far too often. Hopefully it’s not the case here, the Canadians are on the Gigantour right now alongside heavyweights Megadeth, Lamb of God, Opeth and Arch Enemy.
