Gain ( 2006 )
In a scene that seems to be riddled with the New Wave of American Metal bands, it’s great to see a young European band faithful to our sound which has inspired and influenced the American scene so much in the first place.
Sweden’s Within Y have always been a special band, their demo ‘Feeble & Weak’ was already demo of the year in the show in 2002, and it’s great to see them become one of the European bands to be reckoned with.
‘Portraying Dead Dreams’ is their second album and my lord do they give it all! Full of energy, high quality, great melodies and kicking some serious ass. You won’t find any dual vocals, so popular at the moment. Within Y are not jumping on any bandwagon, they’ve been playing straight melodic death from the start. Not only do they do it really well, they do it with conviction, keeping the old style alive if you want, which is quite refreshing actually.
But what sets Within Y apart is the ability to perfectly balance all the instruments, each one absolutely perfect, without any member overpowering the others. The music takes precedence, that’s what tome makes a great band. Pure class!
